Ella Jacobsen, VP Recruitment + Retention
Hi! Congratulations on taking one of the first big steps of many in finding your community for not only your college years, but the rest of your life. Graduating high school and coming to college brings on so many new experiences that can be very exciting while also overwhelming. As we embark on our journeys as young women it is invigorating to surround ourselves with like minded women in a place where we can empower each other as well those outside of our own community. Joining Greek Life allows an individual to become a part of something much greater than themselves. By participating in recruitment you are giving yourself a once in a lifetime experience of meeting so many wonderful women who will allow you to not only learn about who they are and their values but celebrate your own and maybe learn something about yourself you never knew. I never would have imagined that I would be who I am today when I signed up for recruitment, but I have grown to become someone I can admire due to the love and support shown to me through not only my own sisters, but Panhellenic women across all chapters. So, while you may enter this weekend with some nerves; similar to riding a rollercoaster for the first time, unsure of the ups and downs you may face, at the end you will have found yourself surrounded by so many women who are so excited to get to know you and watch you grow into the woman you are destined to be! Take a deep breath, relax, and find peace in knowing you are giving yourself the gift of a strong and reliable foundation surrounded by wonderful women for the rest of your life.
Some Things to Know
-
A sorority is a place where a young woman can find her place and a forever home during her college years that she will carry with her through the rest of her life. While our 8 individual chapters are unique they work cohesively to promote and sustain the largest growing community of women on our campus. Through shared values, academic excellence, and philanthropic efforts UNT Panhellenic women are able to impact our community, our campus, and the world around us.
-
Primary Recruitment is a formal recruitment process that, at UNT, takes place during the fall.
-
Primary recruitment gives potential new members the ability to experience and learn about all eight sororities as they go through the recruitment process. Each day they are presented with new information and insight on each sorority, while narrowing down preferences and ultimately finding the place they will call home.
-
PNM Orientation will be on August 30th and the first day of recruitment will be on August 31, ending with Bid Day on September 2nd.
-
The College Panhellenic Council and the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life facilitate the logistics of recruitment. This means that we ensure recruitment events can happen on campus effectively. We plan convocation, work with the chapters to set event times, facilitate selection on Campus Director, plan Bid Day, and more! While we facilitate the logistics of recruitment, it's important to know that neither NPC or CFSL make any membership decisions on behalf of the potential new member or the chapter. More so, we are not able to know why certain membership decisions are made. Those remain confidential to the individual PNM or the chapter and are not shared with us unless deemed appropriate.
-
There are a few things that qualifies someone for Primary Recruitment:
Registration for UNT courses and active status as UNT student.
Haven’t been initiated into another National Panhellenic Council, Multicultural Greek Council, or National Pan-Hellenic Council sorority.
Must have a minimum 2.75 high school GPA or a 2.5 college GPA
-
Cost varies amongst chapters, as each chapter has unique dues in place. But, the average semesterly cost is between $1,000-$1,400. New members can be expected to pay a slightly higher rate due to one time new member fees or additional fees required by chapters.
-
A bid is a formal invitation from a sorority to a potential new member. It is up to the potential new member to accept or decline this bid. However, denying a bid will inhibit one to join a sorority until the following year's primary recruitment.
Rho Gamma Program
Each year, some of the most authentic and influential leaders of UNT’s Panhellenic community are selected to serve as Rho Gammas and Logistics Team Members. They promise to act as confidants and mentors to the Potential New Members and uphold the standards of the recruitment process while remaining enthusiastic and living the core Panhellenic values of service, scholarship, leadership, and sisterhood. Disaffiliated from their chapters, the Recruitment Team serves as unbiased mentors, friends, and guides throughout the week and help with the planning and coordinating of the recruitment process. They are trained for their role as your listener, role model, cheerleader, confidant, coach, and most of all a friend. They have no contact with their sorority during the week of recruitment, and you will not learn their affiliation until Bid Day. Each of you will be a part of a group led by a Recruitment Counselor who will be your guide throughout the recruitment process.
Rho Gammas are valuable members of the Panhellenic community who volunteer to assist potential new members through the primary recruitment process. They are chosen based on their experiences in their chapter, their qualities as a leader, their willingness to help others, their ability to remain unbiased in all situations, and their strong spirit. On behalf of the Panhellenic Executive Board and the CFSL Coordinators, we greatly respect, admire, and appreciate each of these girls who make primary recruitment what it is. We can’t wait for you to meet them soon and we know they can’t wait to meet you!
